Semiotic Democracy and Rayt

Posted by Mary on 08/30/2007 at 10:40 AM

The theory of semiotic democracy states that ordinary people can re-define and create culture. We are not merely the passive receptacles of judgements, beliefs, and traditions. We can re-work these semiotics (signs) and in so doing re-work culture.

Friends of Rayt

Posted by Mary on 08/14/2007 at 12:44 AM

This section is to thank the wonderful people whose work is turning Rayt into a reality. They are not only extremely smart and creative individuals, they are also incredibly generous with their time and talents. We couldn't do it without them.

Posted by Mary on 08/13/2007 at 09:03 PM

Here I am (seated far right) working on our user interface at the Northern NJ Weekly Hackfest at a Panera (free wifi!) in Paramus.

Dossy Shiobara, fearless leader of the Northern NJ MySQL Meetup, has offered to do a proof-of-technology bookmarklet for us (yay!) and we met up at the

In my original vision, Rayt would only allow you to comment on a website as well as rayt the comments of other users. Joe recently met with Brian O'Neill, and using the successful review site, yelp, as a model, they explored the possibility of rayting

A Truly Social Platform... We Mean the Whole Global Village

Posted by Mary on 08/03/2007 at 10:41 PM

In developing Rayt, we have learned that there are tons of web annotation programs out there (over forty at our last count).  There are even a lot of social annotation products aimed at helping researchers and co-workers share information with each other.

But our vision is broader.  We want the

Different Kinds of Comments

Posted by Mary on 07/30/2007 at 10:54 AM

Joe came up with the idea of commenting on comments and I think it's a good one.  Basically, commenting on comments (comm/comm) allows people to discuss and debate, as in a blog commentary section, with one comment building on the next.

The way comm/comm will work on Rayt is that

Possibilities for the Rayt Website

In addition to the plugin we are also going to have a Rayt website. Visually, we think it will look something like del.icio.us, though we are of too minds as to the Del.icio.us lay-out. Joe thinks that the design is cool and intentionally simple while I think it

Dreaming of Rayt

Posted by Mary on 07/27/2007 at 11:10 AM

You know you've reached a certain point of commitment when you pitch in your sleep.  Well, that's what happened to me last night.  I dreamt that I pitched Rayt to a former boss of mine, Ricken Patel, who was asking why I had been missing work lately (because I am
