Book set in USA so I wrote in American English even though I live in Australia?
Is that okay? I mean, I will send the manuscript to the USA, England and Australia. Will the publishers from Australia and England be bothered if I wrote the manuscript in American English? The story is set in the USA, after all.
Different countries’ publishers may want to make their own alterations anyway. I live in the UK and write in UK english, but I had to Americanize a book that was published in the USA. The editor went through it with me and we had to change some of the more UK english phrases- for example, apparently Americans don’t know what a housing estate is (had to be changed to housing development) or things like saying that someone is riding pillion on a motorcycle (the pillion seat is the little passenger seat on a motorcycle, hence ‘riding pillion’). I imagine it would be the same if I’d written in American english, and it was to be published in the UK.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much as if the book is accepted by a publisher they’ll go through it with an editor and point out anything you need to change.
