Suggested Reading Materials for those interested in Zen and Karate
There are hundreds- if not thousands of books that concern the topics of Zen and/or karate and the many aspects of their philosophies. For anyone interested in these topics, I would like to suggest just a few standout books- ones that have held the test of time, and are very interesting – that is, they are both substantive and they will not bore you in any way, Here are some great books regarding the above:
1) The Tao of Jet Kune Do- by the late, great, Bruce Lee. This book, written some 40 years ago, contains a great wealth of information concerning fighting techniques- and also, importantly, many tidbits of Bruce Lee’s wisdom- his advice on many aspects of life and the martial arts and Zen. It is both a training manual and also, a great source of inspiration. The book serves to illustrate just how far Bruce was ahead of his time- it shows how far he had evolved mentally- beyond the “traditionalist” karate person of that time period;
2) What is Karate?- by Mas Oyama- a beautifully illustrated book that contains many photos and descriptions of traditional karate techniques. Oyama was a great karate master who passed away many years ago and he is considered one of the greatest of the masters- he accented strength and he was a fearless fighter.
3) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance- by Robert Pirsig- written during the 1970′s. This is a great novel that concerns the idea of “Quality”- and what that really means. This concept lies very near the heart of Karate- and Zen. The book is not only a classic by any standard, but it is exciting to read- but it is not a light read- it requires real thinking. It is a great way to get into some real college level philosophy, and it contains deep discussion of both western and eastern philosophy;
4) Tales of Power- by Carlos Casteneda- a 70′s book also. This book is part of a series of works that Carlos authored concerning the time that he spent with a certain Indian group in Central America- the Yaqui Indians. the book is a mystical work of art- and it centers around a character called “don Juan”- a great master who can control and “play with” his own vision of reality- and he leads Casteneda on a “trip” through that reality. It is a book of wonder- and also- of Zen. It is a lot of fun to read. One might first read “ajourney to Ixtlan”- which is earlier in the same series.
5) The Three Pillars of Zen”- by D.T. Suzuki- written earlier in the last century- this is a classical work concerning Zen, and it is a classic in all ways. It is a great way for the general reader to get to know the classic concepts of Zen and Budhism.
There are many other great books- but the reader who is interested in either Zen or Karate- or philosophy in general may find any or all of the above quite interesting. My goal is to set you in the right direction so that you don’t have to plow through possibly lesser books- these listed above are a great way to start, or to get a glimpse of this whole field of knowledge. Many of these concepts have been incorporated at our fitness and karate club located at karobix.com, said concepts often being illustrated in the Guides that can be accessed at that site.

Sixteen Stone
$7.06
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Nirvana should’ve been quite flattered by Sixteen Stone. The English quartet perfectly mimics the early ’90s grunge sound with this ’94 release. As for Kurt Cobain comparisons, singer Gavin Rossdale has a captivating voice, but lyrics are not his forte, as the splintered ramblings of “Everything Zen” indicates. (Gotta do better than “There’s no sex i…

Boys on the Side [VHS]
$1.65
This female-bonding film takes your basic soap opera and twists it inside out. Although director Herbert Ross draws superb performances from his actresses, he occasionally wallows in that maudlin, Hollywood melodrama in which close-ups are crucial. Remember, this is the man who directed Steel Magnolias. However, Ross also does something you don’t expect: he makes you fall in love with his characte…

Alan Watts – The Art of Meditation [VHS]
$18.47
“Meditation has no purpose, no objective, except to be entirely here and now.” Not an easy concept for the competitive, goal-oriented Western mind, which is precisely one of the things that makes Alan Watts’s guide to meditation a fascinating piece of work. Watts, an Englishman who died in 1973 (this piece was shot by filmmaker Elda Hartley in 1971), was an authority on Eastern thought and spiritu…
