Year 9 End of Year Exams: How Important Are They?

I am Year 9 (England) and my end of year exams are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday across all subjects, including Spanish and Geography which I am dropping next year. I have done hardly any revision due to my stress over doing revision mainly resulting from my anxiety issues. I am really nervous about my future and I have three questions I need a lot of detail about. If I revise in the following days (cram study) will I reach my maximum potential in terms of grades? What will happen next year if my results are not good? Do these exams have any bearing on my GCSE results or my future education and success in life?

PS: I an very bright and have a GCSE predicted grade of A* but I
have difficulty controlling my anxiety issues and I have frequent
panic attacks so I get really stressed about anything like exams
because of the pressurising nature of them.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

I had my year 9 exams a few years ago(the year that the government got rid of SATs). My school and probably your school as well will, use them as a guideline for what you are likely to achieve at GCSE, all schools to some extent will do this, as this is the only real test period which you have had for a good few years. As for how they might affects your GCSE’s and further life, they may have a bearing on if you will be allowed to take or join a particular course at GCSE level. But as far as careers go, I’ve never heard of a employer asking to see your year 9 test results, at the least they will look at your GCSE results if you do not have any further education qualifications. As for the cramming and revising, all I can say is calm down. These tests are not the be all and end all, and at the end of the day you can only try your best, but revising a lot beforehand means that even if you don’t get the marks you want, you can say that you tried your best. I too have anxiety problems when it comes to revising. Hope this helps =]

Rock has always had its leaders and its followers. The leaders took chances and weren’t afraid to push rock in some type of new direction; the followers were derivative and embraced what had already been tried and tested. The fact that the followers are derivative doesn’t automatically mean that they are without merit; derivative bands have their place as long as they’re good at what they do. And the derivative approach yields decent results on More Anxiety — not exceptional results, but decent results. This CD/DVD release of March 2010 is actually a reissue of Smile Empty Soul’s 2005 release Anxiety, with some audio bonus tracks (including demos) added along with bonus DVD material. Other Smile Empty Soul albums have made no secret of who the band’s influences are, and More Anxiety is no exception. Angst-ridden post-grunge offerings such as “California’s Lonely,” “Fight of a Suburban Couple,” and “Holes” clearly owe a huge artistic debt to the Seattle alternative bands of the late ’80s and early ’90s; More Anxiety’s musical recipe is basically Nirvana meets Pearl Jam meets Alice in Chains, with some awareness of Staind. Of course, Staind aren’t from Seattle — they’re an East Coast band — but the Seattle grunge explosion certainly influenced Staind along with so many other alternative rock combos that emerged in the mid-’90s. And even though Smile Empty Soul are from California, they wouldn’t sound the way they do were it not for Seattle’s alt-rock contributions. More Anxiety doesn’t offer a lot of surprises, but even so, it’s a worthwhile, albeit predictable, listen if one is a die-hard post-grunge enthusiast. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Jake Kilmer – Drums; Ryan Martin – Bass; Sean Danielsen – Guitar, Vocals

This engaging and wide-ranging history of language anxiety ranges from the Tower of Babel to the internet. It shows how worry about language results from and causes linguistic change, as well as fuelling perennial concerns about class, culture, identity, and social change. – ;This book looks at the ever-present anxieties associated with language change. Focusing on English from Alfred the Great to the present, Tim Machan offers a fresh perspective on the history of language. He reveals amusing and sometimes disconcerting aspects of our linguistic and social behavior and suggests that anxiety about language has sometimes allowed us to avoid the issues we really find disturbing: when speakers of English worry over grammar, sounds, or words the real source. of their anxiety is often not language at all but issues like immigration or social instability. Drawing on an array of evidence from archives, literature, history, polemics, and the press, as well as centuries of legislation, Tim Machan uncovers the perennial nature of concerns about the poverty and purity of English. There has never been a time, he shows, when we weren't worried about the corruption of language and its apparent connections with educational standards, the morality of youth, the integrity of society, and the identity of our nations. This is a fascinating story, told here. in consummate fashion, combining insight and anecdote, and learning with wit – a book for everyone interested in languages and the people who speak them. -

A psychologist and leadership expert explains how to harness the right level of anxiety Most of us see anxiety as a bad thing, so at the first sign of it we try to fight back or run away. But according to Robert Rosen, this outdated view ignores one of the most powerful forces in business: Anxiety helps us concentrate, learn, relate to people, think more creatively, and deliver better results. Of course, too much anxiety causes fear, chaos, and loss of morale. But too little leads to stagnation and a false sense of security. It’s like a rubber band: If you pull it too hard, it breaks. If you don’t pull it hard enough, you fail to maximize its potential. Finding the happy medium between panic and passivity is the secret to success. Drawing on twenty years of research with CEOs, Rosen explains how great leaders succeed by living and leading with just enough anxiety. He shows how the ability to manage anxiety brings out their own best performance, enables them to build great teams, and inspires and challenges their organizations. Only when we allow ourselves to feel our insecurity, discomfort, confusion, and pain can we reach our potential, both as individuals and teams. Just Enough Anxiety offers practical guidance to all kinds of organizations, blending cutting-edge psychology with real-world stories of success.

Recently developed psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders reflect the systematic influence of scientifically generated knowledge, and these new treatments yield strong results. Research in such areas as information processing, cognition, behavioral avoidance, and the physiological components of anxious arousal has increased our knowledge of mediators that cause and maintain anxiety disorders. The development of these new clinical tools is timely, as epidemiological studies now show that up to 25% of people will experience at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Meanwhile, mental health care providers are increasingly pressured to limit the number of sessions and use demonstrably effective treatments. In this book, the authors review psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders, focusing on the scientific basis and demonstrated outcomes of the treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapies are highlighted, as they have been the most frequently investigated approaches to treating anxiety disorders. Individual chapters feature specific phobias: social phobia, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The book is rich in clinical material and integrates science and clinical practice in an effort to help practitioners to improve the effectiveness of their work with anxious clients.

Metacognitive Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

Metacognitive Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

$25

This groundbreaking book explains the “whats” and “how-tos” of metacognitive therapy (MCT), an innovative form of cognitive-behavioral therapy with a growing empirical evidence base. MCT developer Adrian Wells shows that much psychological distress results from how a person responds to negative thoughts and beliefs-for example, by ruminating or worrying-rather than the content of those thoughts. He presents practical techniques and specific protocols for addressing metacognitive processes to effectively treat generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and major depression. Special features include reproducible treatment plans and assessment and case formulation tools, plus a wealth of illustrative case material.
